The Hess Essay Question for 2008 is:

What differences do you think an African American President or a Woman
President could make for the United States of America?

Requirements for applicants:

Middle school student of African-American, Latino, or Native American descent and a resident of Allegheny-Kiski Valley
Plans to attend a four-year college or university
Any middle school student that has competed for the Hightower Early Success Scholarship in the past and received the $500 award is not eligible to compete in the contest again.
Complete the scholarship application including a letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor, the application materials must be submitted (postmarked) by Friday, February 8, 2008!
On Friday, February 8, 2008, HSI will announce the HESS Essay Question via postal mail and HSI website. Applicants will be asked to submit a 1000 word response to the question by Friday, February 15, 2008. (Essays should be postmarked by this date and submitted to the HSI office.)
On Saturday, February 23, 2008, at 1:00 pm at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in New Kensington, students will bring life to their essay through an 8-10 minute oral presentation of their paper.
The winner will be announced on Monday, February 25, 2008 and will be honored at The Clarence James Memorial Scholarship Ceremony on Saturday, May 10, 2008.
