HESS ESSAY QUESTION 2010

Describe an instance when you took a risk by making a choice or decision, or by taking action against what your peers would consider normal or popular.  Please provide as much detail as you can.

Requirements for applicants:

• Middle school student of African-American, Latino, or Native American descent
• Resident of Allegheny-Kiski Valley
• Plans to attend a four-year college or university
• Any middle school student that has competed for the Hightower Early Success Scholarship in the past and received the $500 award is not eligible to compete in the contest again.
• Complete the scholarship application including a letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor, the application materials must be submitted (postmarked) by Monday, January 25, 2010 to the address below.
• On Wednesday, January 27, 2010, HSI will announce the HESS Essay Question via postal mail and HSI website.  Applicants will be asked to submit a 1000 word response to the question by Wednesday, February 10, 2010.  (Essays should be postmarked by this date and submitted to the HSI office.)
• On Saturday, February 20, 2010, at 1pm at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in New Kensington, students will bring life to their essay through an 8-10 minute oral presentation of their paper.
• The winner will be announced on Sunday, February 21, 2010 and will be honored at The Clarence James Memorial Scholarship Ceremony on Saturday, June 12, 2010.
