HESS ESSAY QUESTION 2011
Imagine that you are Martin Luther King Jr. Write a letter to Pres. Barack
Obama. What problems would you ask him to address and why?
(In
addition to your response to the essay, be prepared to create a colorful
poster that summarizes/reflects your response. You will use your poster as
part of your presentation that will be delivered on
Saturday, February 26, 2011.)

Requirements for applicants
-
Middle school student of African-American, Latino, or Native
American descent
-
Resident of Allegheny-Kiski Valley
-
Plans to attend a four-year college or university
-
Any middle
school student that has competed for the Hightower Early Success
Scholarship in the past and received the $500 award is not
eligible to compete in the contest again.

Complete the scholarship application including a letter of
recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor,
the application
materials must be submitted (postmarked) by Wednesday, February
9, 2011 to the address below.

On Thursday, February 10, 2011, HSI will announce the HESS Essay
Question via postal mail and HSI website.
Applicants will be asked to submit a 1000 word response
to the question by Tuesday, February 22, 2011.
(Essays should be postmarked by this date and submitted
to the HSI office.)

On Saturday, February 26, 2011, at 1pm at Mt.
Calvary
Missionary
Baptist
Church
in New Kensington,
students will bring life to their essay through an 8-10 minute
oral presentation of their paper.

The winner will bee
honored at The Clarence James Memorial Scholarship Ceremony on
Saturday, June 11, 2011.
