Hightower
Scholars, Inc.
Program Mission
The
Measure of Our Success Mentoring Program has as its primary mission the personal
development, mentoring, and literacy of minority secondary school students who
are partnered with college students concerned with minority cultures. The
program provides a volunteer cultural experience for the college student that
aids in his/her adjustment to college life, and on the other hand, youngsters
are influenced to view seeking a higher education and establishing a
professional career as obtainable goals. This program was implemented six years
ago at Lake Forest College, and continues to be well received by the students,
local school district, and educators.
To
broaden and strengthen relationships between an undergraduate higher
education institution and neighboring communities with large numbers of
African American and Latino children.
To
adopt one middle school class and one elementary school class for the
purpose of counseling, tutoring, and personal development.
To
match the community students with an African American, Latino or any other
college student who maintains a demonstrated knowledge of, and
interest in, specific cultures.
To
inspire community students to think of a higher education as a realistic,
necessary, and obtainable goal, and to assist them with the essential
preparation.
To
encourage community students to consider XXXXXXX as their educational
choice.
